PREVALENCE AND RISKS OF CVD AND T2DM

85% of cardiac arrests occur in homes and public places

(Vaillancourt & Stiell, 2004)

90% of Canadians have at least 1 risk factor for heart disease or complication

T2DM (Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus) in Canada

Diabetes does not directly lead to death, but complications do.

(Public Health Agency of Canada)

20% of cases remain undiagnosed

(Public Health Agency of Canada)

Complications: blindness, renal failure,

heart disease, stroke, hypertension,

(Heart and Stroke Foundation  (PHAC, 2009)).

(American Heart Association)

BOTH ARE PREVENTABLE.

Cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus are mainly controlled by factors of obesity, blood pressure, diet, exercise, and very little are affected by genetics (5% in T1DM).

BOTH DEATHS CAUSED BY COMPLICATION

Complications such as heart attacks, strokes, and many others with the exception of cardiac arrests are caused by thrombosis, blood clots, embolisms, blood stasis that stop blood and oxygen flow to organs such as the brain, the heart, etc.
